“The Arcadia-Glenside Community Railway” is a functional sculpture that celebrates the connections between Arcadia University and the Glenside community. Led by artist Kelly Cave, this artwork was created as the third installment of the Arcadia Public Art Project; a class offered at Arcadia University designed to bring together students with Glenside community members. The artwork is functional and acts as a seating area or amphitheater. When designing, the team envisioned creating a place where residents could enjoy sitting and reading or where the community could host story time for kids and performances. Using SEPTA’s 1970s “Gulf Oil” paint scheme, the design of the artwork is inspired by the Route 6 trolley line that once traveled up Keswick Avenue. This was once a popular trolley line that would take civilians to the Willow Grove Amusement Park. Using the trolley as a source of inspiration connects the artwork with the history of the site and hopes to inspire more connections between the Glenside and Arcadia communities for years to come.
